The Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act that was recently signed into law contained a remarkable change to securities law which could mean that local businesses could get a huge investment boost. Specifically, the law allows a type of crowdfunding that would allow average Americans to invest in small businesses and keep their money local. The law (rightly) reverses more than 90 years of restrictions on raising capital by allowing “portals” to facilitate small investments from individuals in local businesses. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will now begin a rules making phase to flesh out the exact mechanisms of how the new law will work.
